No-Heat Troubleshooting Checklist

Before you call, try these 5 things. Many heating problems have a simple fix that can save you the cost of a service call. Work through this list from top to bottom. If none of these steps restore your heat, call us immediately.

  • Check your thermostat setting Make sure the thermostat is set to "Heat" mode and the target temperature is set higher than the current room temperature. Replace the batteries if the display is blank or dim. This is the most common cause of false no-heat calls.
  • Press the reset button ONCE Your oil burner has a red reset button on the primary control relay (usually mounted on the burner itself). Press it once and wait 60 seconds. If the burner doesn't start or locks out again, do not press it again. Pressing reset repeatedly can flood the combustion chamber with oil, creating a dangerous condition and a bigger repair job.
  • Check the oil tank gauge Look at the gauge on top of your oil tank. If the needle is at or near empty, you're out of fuel. Call your oil delivery company for an emergency fill. Running the burner dry introduces air into the fuel lines, which may require a technician to bleed the system.
  • Check the circuit breaker Find the breaker labeled for your boiler or furnace in your electrical panel. If it has tripped, flip it fully off and then back on. If it trips again immediately, do not reset it a second time. Call for service.
  • Check the emergency switch There are typically two emergency switches for your heating system: one at the top of the basement stairs and one near the boiler itself. They look like regular light switches, sometimes with a red cover plate. Make sure both are in the ON position. These get accidentally bumped off more often than you'd expect.

If you've tried all five steps and still have no heat, call (631) 261-7729 right now. We answer the phone around the clock.

When to Call for Emergency Service

Some heating problems can wait until business hours. Others can't. If you're experiencing any of the following, don't hesitate, call us immediately at (631) 261-7729.

  • No heat when temperatures are below freezing Without heat, pipes can freeze and burst within hours, causing thousands of dollars in water damage. This is the most urgent heating emergency.
  • Strange noises or unusual smells from your boiler Banging, rumbling, or high-pitched squealing sounds from your heating equipment can indicate serious mechanical problems. Unusual smells, especially burning rubber or hot metal, mean something is wrong.
  • Oil smell near your boiler or oil tank The smell of heating oil in your basement often indicates a fuel leak. This is both a fire hazard and an environmental concern. Stop using the system and call immediately.
  • Carbon monoxide detector alarm If your CO detector goes off, get everyone out of the house first. Then call 911 and your heating company. A malfunctioning boiler or blocked flue can produce deadly carbon monoxide gas.
  • Uncontained water leaking from your boiler Active water leaks from your boiler, circulator pump, or expansion tank can cause water damage and indicate a failed component that needs immediate attention.
  • Boiler making banging or kettling sounds Loud banging, popping, or kettling sounds from your boiler indicate internal problems that should be inspected by a technician before they worsen.

Emergency Services We Provide

Our technicians handle every type of oil heating emergency on Long Island. Here are the most common emergency calls we respond to:

  • Oil burner lockout reset and repair When your burner locks out and the reset button doesn't fix it, we diagnose and repair the underlying cause, whether it's a failed cad cell, bad igniter, clogged nozzle, or fuel supply issue.
  • Emergency boiler repair Cracked sections, leaking valves, failed circulators, broken aquastats, and pressure problems. We repair all makes and models of oil-fired boilers including Weil-McLain, Burnham, Peerless, Buderus, Energy Kinetics, and H.B. Smith.
  • Emergency furnace repair Oil-fired warm air furnaces have their own set of common failures: blower motor issues, limit switch trips, heat exchanger problems, and ductwork disconnections. We handle them all.
  • Oil leak containment If you have a leaking oil line, dripping fuel valve, or cracked oil filter housing, we stop the leak, clean up the immediate mess, and repair or replace the failed component.
  • Frozen pipe thawing When heating system pipes freeze, they need to be thawed carefully to avoid bursting. We safely thaw frozen heating pipes and restore circulation to get your system running again.
  • Water heater emergency repair No hot water is an emergency too. We repair oil-fired water heaters and indirect water heaters that have stopped producing hot water.
